Dr. Laura Niesen de Abruña, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

Laura Niesen de Abruña headshot photoDr. Laura Niesen de Abruña began serving as MSU Denver’s chief academic officer on January 25, 2024.

As Provost, Niesen de Abruña oversees academic activities throughout the university, with direct responsibility for developing, delivering and evaluating academic programs, as well as related policies and procedures. She is also responsible for the promotion, tenure, and retention processes, and other faculty related procedures.

Dr. Niesen de Abruña has served as provost for four other institutions of higher learning and has spent years in the classroom as an accomplished professor of English.

She earned her Ph.D. in English Language and Literature from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.  She holds two masters’ degrees:  a Master of Arts in English Language and Literature from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and a Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania.  Niesen de Abruña earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Smith College.
