Students who wish to pursue this minor will learn essential skills for work and family life – from trust building to persuading, from negotiating to resolving conflict, from training others to crafting memorable messages. Our majors and minors excel in five ways demanded by employers, needed in communities, and essential to thriving relationships: communicating effectively in speech and writing, thinking critically, practicing ethics and respect for diversity, understanding new communication technologies, and collaborating successfully with others.

Dr. Elisa Varela presented her paper co-authored with Dr. Leah Sprain, titled “Facilitating Speaking for Others in Democratic Talk” in the Language and Social Interaction’s prestigious “Top Papers” panel at the 2023 National Communication Association (NCA).
Dr. Wilfredo Alvarez’s book titled “Everyday dirty work: Invisibility, communication and immigrant labor” was awarded the 2023 NCA Ethnography Division Best Book Award.
Dr. Parameswari Mukherjee recently published an article with co-author Dr. Sonia Ivancic in the Journal of Applied Communication Research, titled “Safe water as empowerment, structural dilemma, and savior: conflicting discourses about arsenic groundwater contamination in West Bengal.”

Not only was Bianca Alves Machado, MSU Denver ’22, Communication Studies, B.A., the 2022 Provost’s Award Winner and a 2024 MSU Denver Alumni 10-Under-10 Award Winner, she also strutted her stuff on the Tedx Talk stage where she talks about the power of “place” and taking chances, while staying true to yourself.
