Major in Mathematics with Applied Mathematics Concentration
The concentration in Applied Mathematics is designed to meet the needs of the scientific, technical, and computer-based economy and to prepare the student for graduate study. Our curriculum provides students with state-of-the-art practices and technologies, to ensure that they ae equipped with real-world, hands-on experience.

Senior experience credits are counted elsewhere in the concentration.
- At least 26 of the total 43 hours must be at the level of 3000 or above and at least 7 of the total 43 hours must be at the level of 4000.
- A grade of “C-” or better is required in each course included in the major.
- Regarding substitution of MTH 3140: MTH 3130 and one of the following: MTH 3110, MTH 3650, MTH 4110, MTH 4150, MTH 4410, MTH 4660 may substitute for MTH 3140. If MTH 4410 is used for this substitution it can also be used in the other categories.
- Students who are considering graduate school in mathematics are strongly encouraged to take MTH 4410 – Real Analysis I.

The goals of this program are to provide students with broad-based and coherent preparation in the various disciplines that constitute the mathematical sciences and the pedagogical knowledge of mathematics needed to begin a career as a middle or high school mathematics teacher.
Obtaining this degree, however, does not require that you obtain licensure to be a middle or high school mathematics teacher. This concentration also prepares students for continued study of the mathematical sciences at the graduate level.

- Any 1000 level (or higher) course with a CS prefix
- Any programming-specific MTH course:
- MTH 2520 – R Programming Credits: 4

- Any 3000 or 4000 level MTH course with the exception of MTH 3240
MTH 3240 does not count toward a mathematics major or minor. - Any MTL course with the exception of MTL 3600
MTL 3600 does not count as an elective.
- MTL 4630 – Teaching Secondary Mathematics Credits: 3
- A grade of “C-“ or better is required in each course included in the major.
- Regarding substitution of MTH 3140: MTH 3130 and one of the following: MTH 3640, MTH 3650, MTH 4150 may substitute for MTH 3140.
- For licensure students, MTL 4630 must be taken concurrently with MTL 3638 and EDS 3280 (see more information regarding licensure requirements below).
- Students seeking licensure should see the course catalog for required Education coursework.

- Plan to take MTL 3620 two semesters before student teaching.
- Plan to take MTL 3630 and MTL 3638 in the semester immediately prior to student teaching.
- Plan to take the Secondary Math or Middle Math Praxis exam prior to student teaching. All students must earn the state-required score to be recommended for licensure. Note: MSU Denver can only recommend candidates for one license (secondary or middle) not both.
- Before the Department of Mathematics & Statistics will approve you for student teaching, you must have completed all the mathematics and computer science courses required for the major, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75.

The goals of this program are to provide students with broad-based and coherent preparation in the various disciplines that constitute the mathematical sciences and the specialized training necessary to begin a career in actuarial science, design of experiments, biostatistics, demography, and other areas related to probability and statistics.
This concentration also prepares students for continued study of the mathematical sciences at the graduate level.

- Students who are considering graduate school in mathematics are strongly encouraged to take MTH 4410 – Real Analysis I.
