Getting Started — First Steps

1. Complete the University’s Background Check

After your supervisor has extended an offer, the Student Employment Team will Initiate an email from our third party vendor (HireRight) to begin the background check process. Your MSU Denver email address will be used for this process.

  • Follow the steps in the email to complete and submit the authorization form.  
    • Please note: The email is coming from a our third party vendor, (HireRight). Please check your spam or junk folder if you do not see it in your inbox.
  • Once the Background Check is completed we will update your status in Workday

2. Workday tasks that must be completed.

  • Verify personal information.
  • Enter their your social security where it lists “Government IDs.” 
  • Complete the tax withholdings.
  • Complete the I-9 in Workday. The I-9 has two parts.
    1. Section 1: to be completed in Workday by the employee.
      • This is done in Workday. Please verify information is correct in the 1-9 form 
    2. Section 2: to be completed by Human Resources and will include the verification of documents.
  • When the I-9 form is complete, you will be prompted to complete additional tasks in Workday. Once those tasks are complete, you  can start working. 

First Day of Work and Next Steps for Student Employees

After you have received the confirmation email with your eligible start date, you will need to set your work-schedule with your supervisor.

  • First day of work—please watch the following 3 videos regarding the timesheet process and key points in the Student Employment Handbook. After watching the videos please take our brief quiz (PDF) and review your answers with your supervisor.
  • First week of work – familiarize yourself with the Student Employment Portal and the Student Resources and Timesheets sections.
  • First 30 days of work – you will need to complete the “Required University Trainings”. These trainings will be loaded to your Workday profile and a notification will be sent to your MSU Denver email letting you know they are ready

  • Work Schedule
  • Roles and responsibilities 
  • Any outstanding items that may relate to your specific role
