High School Guidance Counselor
Purpose Statement
School Guidance Counselors work with other educators to ensure student success.
They address students’ emotional needs and design approaches to help students chart a course for their lives and careers beyond school. School Guidance Counselors are advocates for the appropriate level of instruction for students, and they engage in interventions designed to support student growth and the achievement of goals. These interventions are accomplished with students individually, in small-group and whole-class settings, and consist of proactive and responsive services.
School Guidance Counselors work at several levels of responsibility, serving as a resource to individual students, teachers, parents and guardians, and the school. They counsel individual students regarding such matters as excessive tardiness or behavior problems and help them design an appropriate academic program. They may also collaborate with teachers to present curriculum-based guidance lessons or to offer advice on behavior management or study hall procedures. School Guidance Counselors regularly confer with parents about any number of issues that affect student learning, typically including issues related to behavior and emotions. In addition, the counselor might work at the school level, interpreting cognitive, aptitude, and achievement tests; interpreting student records; and assisting the school principal and school psychologist in identifying and resolving student needs, issues, and problems.

15. Showing professionalism. This includes integrity, advocacy, and maintaining confidentiality

Minimum Qualifications
1. Requires a Master’s degree in high school counseling and a school counselor license is a must. Prior experience with at-risk youth helpful.
2. Ability to demonstrate deep and thorough understanding of counseling theory and techniques
3. Knowledge of typical development characteristics of the age group and exceptions to the general patterns, counselor displays knowledge of the extent to which individual students follow the general patterns.
4. Ability to develop positive relationships with, build rapport with, and motivate both students and co-workers.

1. Bilingual (Spanish/English).
2. Related professional experience including guidance-related activities, counseling, or human services experiences with high school age students.
3. Experience in developing and implementing affective/social skills lessons.
4. Experience working with at-risk high school students.

7. Cultural competency; appreciation, embracing and valuing diversity.

– Implement team structures for academic interventions, differentiation and support that leads to progress in mitigating equity gaps in academic achievement.
– Collaborate with other school leaders to ensure evidence based practices are in place to support Special Education Scholars and are implemented in instruction.
– Education Teachers and Paraprofessionals by creating customized coaching plans for them to deliver effective routines and procedures.
– Instruct, plan and/or find differentiated professional development aligned to school goals.
– Progress the capacity of a team of special education teachers to implement relevant curriculum, improve assessment practices, data analysis and action planning.
– Engage teachers in a shared decision-making process for instructional practices.
– Collaborate with teachers to lead conversations with families about student goals and team data around IEP and 504 plans.
– Participate in the creation of the school academy goals and work plans.
– Take part in the creation of assessment schedules, assessment trainings and calendars to maximize student learning, team collaboration, professional development, and team meetings.
Implement a variety of network assessments depending on grade level.
– Participate in planning and weekly meetings to support student culture and academics.
– Actively support and participate in professional development programs to include 1:1 coaching sessions, weekly staff meetings, and other professional development sessions.
– Additional duties as assigned, such as assisting with arrival and dismissal duties, supporting student recruitment, running classes, lunch duty, and other school community tasks.

SpEd & 504 Coordinators will be placed on the initial compensation scale for this position based on years of experience and education level achieved as demonstrated via service records and transcripts. It is the responsibility of the employee to provide the school with the appropriate, original documents to validate their years of experience and education level.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is active and may require standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching throughout the day. The employee must lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds. The employee must have sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. This job consists of work with frequent interruptions; maintaining emotional control under stress. The environment is often a classroom, cafeteria, library, playground or other campus location.
